Sun 4th– Sun 11th July. Walpole-Denmark-Albany
Packed up and prepared for our lengthy travel day today to Denmark. 70kms in total!Sunday 4th July
Along the way we stopped in at a Cidery and Meadery, picking up a few bottles of wine made from honey and plenty of sauces.
After setting up at the Riverbend Caravan Park… on sites that were completely underwater just two weeks ago due large storms and river flooding, we took a drive to Green Pools and Elephant Rocks in the William Bay NP. Then cruised along the coast back into Denmark, dodging the rain as best as we could.
Monday 5th July
In to town this morning for a wander around but as it was another cold and wet day we ended up at the Boston Brewery for lunch. Taking our cards with us we ended up playing Samba all afternoon and had dinner there as well.
Tuesday 6th July
Departing Denmark today, again for a long drive (43 kms) but went the scenic route via Cosy Corner beach.
Then set ourselves up at Albany Happy Days Caravan Park. Very nice setup sites on the river, concrete annex area and gravel van pads… perfect for the amount of rain expected over the next few days.
After lunch we headed for the scenic coast while some sun was evident. Visiting the Gap and Natures Bridge, along with the Blowholes. All very spectacular. Also saw some whales again playing offshore.
Followed by cocktails at Liberte in Albany.
Wednesday 7th July
Bit showery today so planned to do some indoor stuff. First visiting “Dog Rock” then “Emu Point” and Middleton Beach before heading for the National Anzac Centre.
Unfortunately due storm damage last night the main part of the National Anzac Centre was closed today. We wandered the grounds and lookout until the rain set in. Photo below of the bay where the 1st and 2nd Military Convoys amassed before leaving Australia during WW1, arriving at Gallipoli.
Decided to head to the Historic Whaling Station, this provided a great insight into the whaling industry before it was closed down in 1978.
And a great Thai dinner.
Thursday 8th July
Bit of a rest/chore day. But did manage to visit the town lookout. Also a photo of our backyard at the caravan park.
Friday 9th July
Looks like a little bit of fine weather?? So we headed for the Granite Skywalk in the Porongorup NP, a medium 4.4 km hike with some fantastic views when you get there.
Afterwards we headed for the National Anzac Centre again after checking it was open today. This was an amazing experience, very interactive as you read and hear the stories from WW1 and also able to follow an individual soldier (different for each of us) who was part of the 1st or 2nd Military convoys that departed Albany for Gallipoli on 1st November 1914.
Saturday 10th July
Due to the wet weather today and significant improvement forecast for tomorrow (Sunday) we decided to make today a rest day, extend our stay until Monday which will allow us to take advantage of Sunday’s good forecast.
Sunday 11th July
Using the sunny conditions off we went to visit Little Beach in Two Peoples Bay NP…
Then on to the Cheyne Beach area. We had been advised that whales frequent the channel between Cheyne Beach and Bald Island. SO we headed straight for Channel Point, a squeezy 4wd track to get there, but definitely worth it. Certainly saw some whales and the highlight was one of the whales completely jumping out of the water just below our viewing point… took us all by surprise so no photo evidence of the jump. But still plenty of photos of the whales.
