Sat 23 & Sun 24 June - Lake Argyle

Image
Day 15-16 Our campsite… And its views…   Relaxing Sunday morning, finish a bit of washing, a bit of reading… In the afternoon we went for a cruise on Lake Argyle, a huge man made inland sea.  Very interesting to see that back in 1969-71 (constructing through the dry seasons only) they built the dam for only $22m and it holds normally 20 Sydney Harbours but can accommodate 80 Sydney Harbours if required for flood mitigation.   Oh!  Tracey managed to buy a new camera in Kununurra and is trialling some of its features… with stunning results!     Some of the inhabitants, a fresh water crocodile…   Canvas waiting to happen?     This cruise was an amazing trip when understanding the creation of the Lake, over the 3hr time frame we only travelled less than the top quarter of the lake.  It measures 50x40km at its widest points.   Leaving early Monday to visit the Kununurra Nissan (Toyota & Holden) to re-gas the air conditioner, we’ll worry about its leak later?

Wed 20, Thu 21 & Fri 22 June - Purnululu NP (Bungle Bungle)

Day 12-14 Into the Bungles we travel, more little issues.  Patrol air conditioner has stopped working, Tracey’s camera is playing up and finally decided during these few days that the dusty conditions and 8-9 years of service was enough.  Thus Kate was nice enough to lend Tracey (our official photographer) her camera.   to The Bungles are amazing.  Paul is absolutely correct… most tourist drawcards never live up to their hype, however this area is massive and far exceeds our expectations. Even if we had more photos, they would not be able to do this place justice. We did all the NP walks with the Echidna Chasm being the pick but they were all different and worthwhile.       Mini Palms Walk         Echidna Chasm   Paul and Kate ventured to the air to see the park in all its  glory.       With some magnificent colours as the sun sets.     Enjoying, again, a lovely roast one evening prepared by Paul but also having Tracey’s famous upside-down pineapple cake for

Tue 19 June Tanami Track – Wolfe Creek Crater

Day 11 A couple of quick updates to catch up, plenty of photos…  computer car charger packed it in so couldn’t charge the computer for a few days. Well looked after welcome to WA sign??         On coming traffic !!!        And of course our customary camp site photo at Wolfe Creek…       Wolfe creek crater…  very impressive .  Paul, Kyle and I all walked down into the centre of it, quite a steep rim but to get the feel of the size was fantastic.  Equivalent to at least a 50000t battleship hitting the earth at 15km/sec.  Probably a decent bang.              More quick updates soon.  Having a great time!

Day 10 Mon Glen Helen Resort – Tanami Track

Image
Travel day.. one of the last before we reach our destination – Kimberley’s. Some stunning views…   And some corrugations … And our campsite…   And “No flies on me!”  Tracey combating the flies that have found us.     Tomorrow onwards to Wolfe Creek Crater for the night. See ya.

Day 9 Sun Rest Day

Day to catch up on some washing, organising the car and well doing not much. Our campsite early morning.. After brunch we wandered up to have a look at Glen Helen Gorge, one of the few permanent water holes on the Finke River. Again Tracey grabbed some fantastic photos.      And an interesting one!   Relaxing into the afternoon whilst watching Paul prepare our evening meal.  Roast Lamb, vegetables followed by lemon meringue pie all made from scratch.     And the result was fantastic, everything perfect.   After dinner back down to the live music put on by Chris Aronsten, I think Paul is a fan… bought a CD 4 years ago and bought another yesterday.     Big day tomorrow heading into the Tanami Desert, stopping along the track somewhere… then onto Wolfe Creek Crater for the next night.  Talk soon.

Day 8 Sat Ruby Gap (East Macdonnell Ranges) – Glen Helen Resort (West Macdonnell Ranges

Up and away about 9:00 again and the morning light making the ranges a spectacular sight.  Something we didn’t see yesterday as there was a lot of cloud cover and we were too tired at the end of the day. But here are a few of the pictures Tracey managed to snap.           We stopped at Emily Gorge for a quick look.   Then into Alice Springs for supplies… unable to buy the cask wine until after 6pm due NT alcohol restrictions, so vodka and bourban cans instead!  (Bottles of wine don’t survive on the dirt roads.) After stocking up we went straight to Glen Helen Resort campground and set up… showered and down to a Restaurant meal – very nice.  Then listening to live music from a very capable musician (Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle, Spoons) – Chris Aronsten.  This is the same musician that Kate and Paul enjoyed so much last time they visited 4 years ago, they stayed afterwards and chatted (drank) with Chris for a while.  I hear Paul even strummed a few tunes on the Guitar. Late to bed
