Sun 29th July - Alice Springs – Yulara (Ayers Rock)

Image
Day 14  (Sun 29/7/18) After a great breakfast at our B&B we hit the bitumen road to Yulara, arriving just after lunch.  Forecast has us getting down to low temperatures again. Camp set up… Then for the evening we had booked “Field of Lights – Star pass” which was absolutely stunning.  Starting with watching the sunset on Ayers Rock with drinks and canapés and finishing with the Field of lights coming to life.             And to top off the experience we had the moon rise over the Field of Lights which was absolutely awesome!!! As we head out tomorrow morning, we lose Telstra coverage for most of our trip through to Halls Creek and Kununurra, our plan has us arriving Kununurra around Wednesday 22nd August.  If we get any signal along the way, I will try to upload the latest Blog posts.

Day 12 (Fri 27/7/18)   Alice Springs – Rest/clean up Day Nothing exciting these two days as we planned them to refresh ourselves and to clean and stock up in preparation to start the real adventure.  The Canning Stock Route…  although surprisingly the CSR is still flooded between Well 25 & 26 thus we will need to use a diversion route through the Tefler mine.  We will advise all the details getting closer. Washing of clothes, cars and ourselves all done. A couple of superficial issues with the cars, worked on and solutions prepared. The B&B we are staying in is great and allows us to spread out and relax then a Chinese meal for dinner… no cooking or cleaning up!!     Day 13 (Sat 28/7/18)   Alice Springs  -  Rest/stock up Day Up very early to catch a glimpse of the blood moon eclipse.     Groceries and meat for 4 weeks done today then the hour or so trying to work out where to fit it all in the car.  but all done and finally some more relaxing in the B&B’s spa bath, which Tr

Sat 21st – Thu 26th July - Birdsville – Simpson – Alice Springs

Day 6 (Sat 21/7/18)   Birdsville  -  Simpson Desert (QAA Track) First light, at least when the the sun hits the tent, we are up.  Low temperatures again but we manage.  First stop is the Birdsville bakery for a Camel pie or pastry for breakfast before we head off into the desert. Then on towards Big Red.     First stop “Big Red”, the largest sand dune in the desert.  Played with the drone a little to try some “follow me” shots.. somewhat successful. Then on to our campsite for the evening somewhere along the QAA Line.  106km’s travelled today. Day 7 (Sun 22/7/18)   Simpson Desert  -  Simpson Desert (Knolls track junction) Up and away about 9:30, will learn to park in positions that will allow the sun to wake us up rather than hiding behind sand dunes or trees. Fairly tough going as the tracks seem to be all chewed up and therefore bouncy.  Probably got something to do with 9000 people at the Big Bash last week… we assume many would have linked a Simpson adventure

Thu 19th – Fri 20th July - Cooper Creek – Birdsville

Day 4 (Thu 19/7/18)   Cooper Creek – Rest Day We have camped along the Cooper Creek a number of times on our way to/from Birdsville in the past and have always said it would be nice just to relax here.  So this trip we decided to spend an extra night just to relax and wander around the river after a hearty breakfast.         I also got the drone out to begin to learn more on how to operate it and get some video and photos from a different angle. Day 5 (Fri 20/7/18)    Cooper Creek (Windorah) – Birdsville Left at 9am for our drive to Birdsville, mostly dirt road today but continue to have to contend with that emu!! Then a quick stop on a hill top to view the surrounding area, the vastness of the outback.     And on  in to Birdsville for a few drinks and BBQ dinner in the Birdsville Hotel. Tomorrow we head out into the Simpson Desert, back into phone coverage next Friday night when we arrive in Alice Springs.  Expect some catch up blogs then.
