Mon 16th – Wed 18th July – Home – Cooper Creek
Day 1 (Mon 16/7/18) Brisbane – Mitchell
Well it was 6:30am and ready we were for our adventure. Group picture…
Below is a map of our ‘current’ plan, although from past experience this may or may not eventuate exactly as planned.
We headed out along the bitumen all day, travel day only so no interesting sights. Camping spot for the evening was at Mitchell, with an evening pub meal at the very old Mitchell Hotel.
We did however start with a very fresh evening for the first night of camping, it was 2 degrees when we went to bed and got down to minus 3.7 degrees in the early hours of the morning but we all survived and the bedding was tested with no issues… all warm as toast as long as you don’t move out from under the covers until the sun hits the tent.
Day 2 (Tue 17/7/18) Mitchell – Wyandra – Toompine
Not so suprisingly we were a little slow this morning after the low overnight temperature, but got away after some breakfast around 9:30am. Another straight travel day, but visiting a couple of pubs from our “Outback Pubs” book to sign them off.
Of course these trips we never miss out on seeing the wildlife, today along with the standard kangaroos we saw some feral pigs, cat and many emus…
Lunch at the Gladstone Hotel.
Then some outback roads, rather than the “highway” to get us to our evening stop at the Toompine Hotel.
The interesting thing about arriving here was that also arriving was a charity bash. Adelaide – Cotton Tree (Maroochydore), in 7 days virtually on all dirt roads. So it was a lively night with music playing until 2am. But as the the overnight temperature only dropped to 2 degrees it wasn’t too bad.
Day 3 (Wed 18/7/18) Toompine – Quilpie - Cooper Creek
Waking up to Kates Birthday – Happy Birthday Kate…
Then travel day, feeling like we are now “outback”.
Campsite along the banks of Cooper Creek with a wonderful camp cooked roast chicken and veggies, cooked in our Cobb’s. Also tested out our new portable firepit with great success. Temperature warming up as only dropped to 6 degrees overnight.
