Fri 4th November – Great Ocean Road

Image
Day 7 We packed up our camp and headed down the Great Ocean Road in beautiful conditions although a little windy. This is a fantastic road on this clear day, many pictures. Something we learned, this road was built by ex diggers in memorial to those who did not return from WW1.       Point Addis…       Split Rock Lighthouse…         Then travelling along the road….                     Then due to very strong winds (reports of 104km gusts overnight) we opted to grab a cabin at Apollo Bay.  View from our cabin balcony.

Thu 3rd November – Starting the Great Ocean Road

Day 6 Leaving our cabin, we headed for the Queen Victoria Markets to have a look around and stock up on meat and groceries.  Came away with some pink ear muffs (yes for Tracey) and a couple of jackets (one leather one to replace my old one, also bought at these markets about 10 years ago).                                       Then on to the start of the Great Ocean Road at Torquay.                                        And Bells Beach…     Then on to a lovely grassy campsite at Anglesea.                   ...

Tue 1st & Wed 2nd November – Melbourne Cup & surrounds

Day 4 Melbourne Cup day.  Up to get ready then onto the shuttle from our cabin and met some friends at the track… only 97000 people so not surprising to meet someone we know from Brisbane!!!              We had a wonderful day, in the kitty funds we picked up 1st and 2nd in the Melbourne Cup… great effort unfortunately it was not enough to cover our losses for the rest of the day… anyhow we supported the bookies well.     Day 5 Another night luxuriating in the cabin then off into Melbourne City for a bit sightseeing.  Visiting some of the laneways and spectacular arcades.           After standing on the side of he road for 5 minutes deciding where to go for an old fashioned lunchtime beer, we finally noticed directly across the road a basement bar.  So a quick drink at the Millhouse… interesting roof linings in the Ladies & Gents.         ...

Sat 29th, Sun 30th & Mon 31st October – Brisbane to Melbourne

Day 1 Sat Met Kate & Paul at the rendezvous point on time…  where Tracey and I discussed who was responsible for packing the camera (which was currently not in the car), so back home to grab the camera.  We meet up again and on the road at 6:30am.         Even on the first day, had to take a short cut…     Then on to Pilliga Baths for our overnight first camp, outside temperature 28 degrees, water temperature 37 degrees… lovely.  Flies annoying. Fantastic first astrological night… 5 shooting stars and 3 satellites were seen but we must have lost some of our outback skills as we could not find the Southern Cross.       Day 2 Sun Unfortunately none of us slept too much as the wind howled from 1am.  We left around 8:30, stopped in at the Parkes Radio Telescope...  Checked out the big Dish and watched some interesting 3d videos, chatted through the whispering dishes.  We left feeling t...

Victoria & the High Country (Melbourne Cup included) - 2016

Image
Well its time for us to get started on our next trip.  Kate & Paul, Tracey & myself are heading for Victoria for November 2016. The Plan: Melbourne Cup   -   Great Ocean Road   -   The Grampians   -   Sovereign Hill   -   Mornington Peninsula   -   Phillip Island   -   Wilsons Promontory   -   Victoria’s High Country   -   Alpine National Park   -   East Coast return. This trip we test out our new vehicle (yes I have switched from a Patrol – no diesel option, but I’ll admit the powere this has is very nice), we’ve spent 12 months and many $$ setting it up to the way we want.  It should do us well.
