Fri 14th to Sun 16th July - Dubrovnik to Split
Day 5 - Friday.
Up very early (3:30am) to combat the roadworks and customs at the airport for our 6:25 flight to Dubrovnik. Stansted airport at 4:45am was packed with people traveling all over the place, our 6:25 flight looked like it was about the 30th flight of the morning. Our flight was given a gate 15 minutes before boarding time, the reason being was you then needed to hop on a train to take you to the gates... all this experience very different to normal. Then on arrival onto a bus on the Tarmac to take you to the terminal.
View of the "Old Town" of Dubrovnik as we arrive.
View from our unit on the hill.
After settling in we wandered down to the old town, found a marvellous restaurant for lunch. A long lunch, a few wines and a bill showing 960. Something to get used to, 960 Kuna is about $190 not so bad for a long afternoon lunch for 4.
Some photos of the old town. Originally built around 1100's, a lot was rebuilt by UNESCO after the 1990s war as it was deemed a world heritage sight in 1974.
Night time from our unit!
Day 6 - Saturday.
Down to the Old Town again for our "Game of thrones" tour in the morning. A lot of scenes from the first few seasons of Game of Thrones were shot in Dubrovnik. Our guide Tonka, was fantastic and also was an extra in a few episodes, along with her archeology degrees provided a wonderful insight into the town and the settings for Game of Thrones. Paul, Kate and Tracey who have seen all the game of Throne episodes now want to revisit all the episodes after seeing the real life settings throughout the town.
Part of the tour included a trip across to Lokrum island to meet up with Tonka's brother Tom, for a quick guide around the island including the iron throne from Game of Thrones. Then a relaxing afternoon.
And the local wildlife, different from what we are use to.
Day 7 - Sunday. Dubrovnik to Split
Picked up our rental car at about 9:30am and headed for Split. Stopping first at another of the Game of Thrones filming location, the Arboretum. And down to an old port. As with the rest of the coast, the views are fantastic.
Then on through the border to Bosnia. There was talk that this could take a while to get through... possibly hours. We got through very quickly at both ends of the 10km stretch through Bosnia, however going the other way was a different story with about a 4 km waiting queue at the Bosnia to Croatia border.
Arriving into Split late in the afternoon. Meal at a local restaurant in the residential area which was great.
