Sun 23rd to Tue 25th July - Prague

Day 14 - Sunday.  Zagreb to Prague

Up very early for our 9:00 flight, unfortunately it was slightly delayed so departed around 9:45.

Into Prague's Old Town with its cobbled streets.   Into a very old building with decaying walls and floor to our prebooked Apartment's reception, concerning!!  However, with our Apartment around the corner, on the 5th floor and recently (last few years) renovated; it ended up being a very good and comfortable unit.

A wander around the town after lunch.

Starting with the Old Town Square...

And the famous Astronomical Clock.  On the hour the top windows open and the skeleton rings the bells.

Walking down the streets, it is a different feel to the cities in Croatia.  It feels more affluent, wider streets, less medieval and more 19th century.  But probably more impressive.

Our "Taste of Prague" food & drinks tour was fantastic.  We visited 6 restaurants/food places and tried some dishes we would not normally have ordered.  All were fantastic.  Learnt a fair bit about Prague's recent history, becoming an independent nation twice and invaded twice and under communist rule for 30 years all in the past 100 years.  Farms, vineyards etc were all taken over by the government under communist rule, restaurants and cafe's were given the same set menu to deliver.  But after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the farms, vineyards etc were all returned to the original families.  So the renaissance (if you like) of Czech food had to restart, long forgotten recipes brought back to life some with modern twists.  All very interesting.

Little did we know that the Czech are, per capita, the biggest beer drinkers in the world.

And after a 4 hour Food and wine tour.....  back to the apartment to contemplate!

Light dinner in a little cafe in the rain.

Day 16 - Tuesday.  Prague

Up reasonably early as we wanted to get to Prague Castle before it gets too busy.  It is the largest ancient Castle complex in the world, it is also the place where the Czech kings, Holy Roman Emperors and Presidents of the Czech Republic have had their offices there.

Crossing the Charles Bridge...

St Vitus Cathederal within the Prague Castle grounds.

And of course an afternoon break.

Then an early night for our 7:20 flight in the morning.
