Day 21

Bindaree Hut to Howitt Plains

Up and again on the road at the extremely early time of 10:30am… we are on holidays!

Along 16 mile Jeep track, Bluff track and King Billy track… about 50km’s today averaging about 10km/h. But visiting some nice huts, Bluff and Lovicks… and not so nice Howitt’s Hut.  These huts are used to get out of the cold, especially for horseback riders and walkers.  Mainly travelled today so here are some of the photos.

But found a spot on Howitt Plains to camp.  At 1615m elevation this is by far the highest we have ever camped.  Since our first couple of days in the High Country the weather has been superb, 25+ degrees each day and although it gets cold at night, this is managed by campfire and warm clothes.

Probably the pick of campsites yet even without a river beside it… After what looked like some rain coming at 7pm to absolute clears skies by 8pm we enjoyed a fantastic night of stargazing and satellite spotting – being on top of a hill rather than in the valley made this so much better.

Day 22

Howitt Plains to Talbotville

Left today a little earlier than normal… probably due to the sun reaching us much sooner being on top of a hill.

After yesterdays drive along the bush tracks we chose today to adjust our plans and keep mainly to the better maintained tracks, thus able to drive at 60km/h.  According to the “sights to see” we still needed to travel on the Blue Rag Range and Billy Goats Bluff tracks, thus we are heading for Billy goats bluff track today.

As we started on top of the hills today, it was very picturesque to see the clouds in the valleys.

Then on to “The Pinnacles” for lunch.  These are the best views so far… Wow!

Then down (luckily as if we climbed this we would not have seen the views…) the iconic Billy Goat Bluff Track, starting with shrieks from the passenger seat.  This is a drop of 1200m in 8km and has the longest unbroken climb/descent in Australia at a change in elevation of 750m.

Then on to find a campsite along the river… of course they’re on the other side.

And such a warm day, even the High Country rivers are inviting.

Day 23

Such a wonderful spot we opt to have a rest day here on the Wongungarra river, Talbotville.

Reading books, having quick dips in the stream and of course preparing the fire for a baked dinner, damper and upside down pineapple cake…
