Tue 15th & Wed 16th November – Victoria High Country
Day 18
Licola to Bush campsite
No rain since early yesterday afternoon, yippee. Packing tents up in the dry. Mapped out a plan to to head towards Sheepyard Flats today. Through some lovely countryside… again with some interesting animals.
Then through some interesting tracks and scenery.
Now if the last steep, rocky 5 km’s (that took well over an hour) wasn’t enough of an obstacle then this fallen tree across the path was… we could not go around and could not fit under. The thought of having to return the way we came was not a comfortable option as it would have been all uphill on the steep rocky section, we would have had to winch in many spots, and it was already after our usual sit down and have a drink time of 4pm.
So the only option was to make us fit. Dig the side wall away and dig a trench for the right tires to sink into.
Then try again….
Nope, more digging… tires let down to 10psi & rooftop tent ladder removed. But finally car 1 has made it through. Although we still struggled until Paul thought to simply ratchet the tent down tighter!!!
Now for car 2…
Nope… so its ladder gets removed and we try again.
Finally both cars through, this took us about 1.5 hrs and we left our mark…
So we camped soon after… finally. But enjoyed Tracey’s Lamb burger and chips…
Oh… by the way the weather was beautiful today.
Day 19
Bush campsite to Mirimbah (base of Mt Buller ski resort).
Off we went today hoping for some more scenery rather than 4wd obstacles. The path today has less off the beaten tracks to cover so should be what we want although we do have to travel into Mansfield via bitumen to fill up with fuel.
Some of the scenery we saw from the road… Mt Buller in the back ground of photo 2.
And a reminder of what is around in the bush.
Then a visit to the tunnel deliberately cut through the rock to divert some of the river, 100m long. We can’t find much information on what this was for… some further research to be done.
Lunch at Howqua Hills with some new friends…
Then into Mansfield for some fuel and up to Mt Buller to have a look, some fantastic views. Very eerie driving through a ski resort with so much accommodation and chair lifts etc. but no-one here.
Then camping down lower at Mirimbah…
